A person's sexual orientation or gender identity is an important part of their identity and influences not only their sexual behaviour or self-image, but also other areas of their life.
It is therefore important that care takes these aspects into account and addresses the special needs of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people.
Experienced or feared discrimination can lead to LGBTIQ+ people withdrawing from institutions, not seeking medical or care services in the first place - which can have serious consequences if medical treatment is necessary or can lead to social or care deficits.
There may be physical and psychosocial consequences, e.g. from involuntary reassignment surgery performed on intersex people. These also require special knowledge and sensitivity in care and support.
Our aim is to create a platform that helps lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people, intersex people and people with other gender identities to find the right support services and contacts relating to LGBTIQ+ care simply and free of charge. It serves to network people in need of care, carers, care providers, caring relatives and the family of choice.
With our queer care portal, we want to create a solution that allows people to find help from the community quickly and clearly. We are convinced that our portal will make a valuable contribution to improving the quality of life of everyone involved.
My name is Andreas (pronoun: he/she) and I live in Berlin. I have been working as an employed care counsellor for several years. In this job, I get to know many people who are either in need of care themselves, care for relatives or work in the care sector. Once you get to know each other better and more personally, people often tell me how difficult it is to navigate the world of care as a queer person. It's not always the overt discrimination that gets to people, but the unspoken, the feeling of not being able to be 100 % the way you feel and are, even in such a difficult situation.
This should no longer be the case, which is why I would like to use this platform to try and create a contact point for all queer people in care. Where you can find advice, community and help from people who have a connection to LGBTIQ+.
This project is on a voluntary basis and I am happy to welcome more people who would like to join in and get involved 🙂 .

Did you know that 97% of residential care facilities cannot provide quality standards in dealing with same-sex living environments? This fact is worrying and emphasises the need for change. Unfortunately, many LGBTIQ people hide their sexuality and identity for fear of discrimination and marginalisation, while inter* people are often afraid of discrimination because of their physicality. It is our responsibility to create an environment where all people are safe and accepted, regardless of their sexuality or identity.
A positive example of this is the "Lebensort Vielfalt" in Berlin.
Our mission is to realise a care system that is based on queer-sensitive and lifeworld-recognising practice. We want every care experience to respect and incorporate the identity and realities of the people in need of care to ensure truly inclusive care.
We endeavour to establish a comprehensive network of care services that respects and promotes the diversity and uniqueness of each person. Our aim is for everyone to feel recognised, valued, protected and cared for in their own environment.
