Applying for a care degree is a critical step in order to receive the necessary support services and financial assistance from long-term care insurance. In our latest video, we provide LGBTIQ* people as well as their relatives and family members of choice with detailed guidance on how to successfully navigate this process.

Start of the application process

The application process usually begins with a phone call to the long-term care insurance fund or by writing a short, informal letter to apply for long-term care insurance benefits. This step sets the process in motion that ultimately leads to an assessment and categorisation into one of five care grades, depending on the independence of the person in need of care.

Special challenges for the LGBTIQ community*

LGBTIQ* people can face specific challenges in the process of applying for long-term care. Determining the need for care can be more complex when cultural sensitivity and a deep understanding of the particular needs associated with the identity and circumstances of LGBTIQ* people are required. It is crucial that the medical service or independent assessors have the necessary knowledge and empathy to ensure a fair and accurate assessment. Also that the position of the members of your family of choice is addressed by you and taken into account during the assessment.

Importance of correct documentation and preparation

We also discuss the importance of preparing adequately for the assessment. This includes collecting all relevant medical records and documenting daily challenges and limitations in self-care. These preparations are essential to ensure that the assessors get a clear picture of your care and support situation.

Andreas from Queer Care
My name is Andreas and I live and work in Berlin. As a care counsellor, I get to know many people who are either in need of care themselves, care for relatives or work in the care sector. People often tell me how difficult it is to navigate the world of care as a queer person. With my experience as a social insurance employee, I help queer people in care on a voluntary basis to find information and support.
