Care aids are devices and products that help people in need of care from the LGBTI* community to maintain a higher degree of independence and quality of life and to relieve relatives and caregivers. In many cases, long-term care insurance covers all or part of the costs. There are different types of long-term care aids, such as wheelchairs, nursing beds, toilet chairs, shower chairs, bathtub lifts, stair lifts, incontinence products, nursing clothing and nutritional aids. However, the assumption of costs is subject to certain conditions and the selection of products is specified in the list of aids of the statutory health and long-term care insurance funds. Nursing aids are usually provided on a loan basis. We give you a further overview here.

LGBTI care services are important to ensure that LGBTI people receive the care they need and deserve and to create a supportive environment.

The queer care application: step-by-step guide

We provide an overview of the application process for care services for queer people in need of care. Depending on the type of insurance, the application is submitted to the long-term care insurance fund or the private insurance company. The first step is to apply for care benefits. There is a sample application form which must be completed and sent to the care insurance fund. Within 2 weeks of submitting the application, an assessment appointment will be arranged at which an assessor will determine the need for care. Before the assessment appointment, it is advisable to take advantage of a free care consultation. Below we explain step by step how the procedure works.

The topic of culturally sensitive care for lesbians and gays in elderly care is dealt with in this article. The Sozialwerk für Lesben und Schwule e.V. has set up a specialist unit in NRW to establish culturally sensitive care for the elderly and to develop modules for basic, further and advanced training. The information brochure "Culturally sensitive care for lesbians and gays" published by the Cologne-based association Rubicon e.V. provides care staff with important information about the specific needs and problems of older lesbians and gays. The aim of the project is to raise awareness among carers and healthcare providers so that they can better understand and support the living situation of older lesbians and gay men in need of care.

In January 2017, the "Care and LGBTIQ*" network was founded at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. It is committed to the health and nursing care of LGBTIQ* people and aims to counteract discrimination in medical facilities. The project provides a safe environment for LGBTIQ* people who need medical services and plans training for medical staff. It aims to create a more inclusive and supportive healthcare system to promote equality and equal opportunities for LGBTIQ people.
